We highly recommend Mason’s Chimney Service. They found a dangerous structural issue that a previous company that inspected our chimney did not. Mason’s repaired the issue, then installed a Ahren Fire system and new gas log set. They were wonderful to work with from start to finish. They are detail oriented and communicated with us throughout the entire job. We appreciated that they kept their work area outdoors and inside the home very clean and protected. We couldn’t be happier with our new fireplace and are relieved that the flaw was found. This could have prevented a very devastating situation. We are so grateful. Mason’s Chimney service is not just a company of honest, reliable workers, but they are also great people. It was a pleasure to work with them.-Stephanie W.
Why Is My Fireplace Smoky?
There isn’t anything more unpleasant than lighting up your fireplace only to be surrounded by smoke moments later. The experience can be scary and unsettling when you don’t know why your fireplace is smoky when it hasn’t been in the past. Plumes of smoke billowing from the chimney is a sign that something is awry, but the causes can range from non-threatening to urgent. These are some of the most common causes of a smoky fireplace:
- You forgot to open the damper. The damper is a metal plate that controls the airflow throughout the chimney. If it’s not open all the way, smoke can back up into the room.
- The chimney is cold. Lighting a fire in a cold fireplace will cause condensation, leading to excessive smoke. Try preheating your chimney by rolling up an old newspaper, lighting one end, and holding it up towards the flue for a few minutes.
- The firewood is unseasoned. If you have a wood-burning fireplace or stove, you should make it a point to only use seasoned firewood. Unseasoned firewood holds a lot of moisture and will produce a lot of smoke when it’s burned. It can also accelerate creosote buildup.
- There is a blockage. Creosote and other debris can obstruct airflow, which can block the air from flowing properly and cause smoke to back up into your house. An annual chimney sweeping can clear out blockages.
- Flawed design or improper installation. Your fireplace may not work properly if it isn’t correctly sized to fit your chimney. Similarly, a mistake during the installation process could be at fault.
